Kripalu Outdoors

September 29 - October 2

Journey into the spiritual practice of intuitive archery with lead Kripalu faculty Micah Mortali at Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health. A lifelong archer, Micah guides you through the fundamentals of instinctive shooting, a practice similar to throwing a baseball, where you aim with your attention rather than mechanical precision, allowing your whole being to become absorbed in the process.

Over this outdoor intensive, you’ll learn the history of archery and its different philosophical traditions, including the ancient Vedic practice of Dhanurveda, or the Way of the Bow. You’ll explore the basic anatomy of the bow and arrow, the fundamentals of safe shooting, which trees and local materials make good bows and arrows, and how to integrate breathwork to deepen your focus and connection.

This retreat frames archery as a regular personal practice that cultivates mindful awareness and a greater connection with the natural world. It’s especially suited for anyone who has always dreamed of drawing a bow and is drawn to a dynamic, meditative practice rooted in deep ancestral memory.

why rooh recommends attending

Kripalu is a place we recommend often, and it’s easy to see why: there’s a groundedness to the setting and the community there that makes even an unfamiliar practice feel accessible and welcoming.

What we love about this retreat is how it reframes something as simple as archery into a genuine meditative practice. It’s not about competition or precision, but the presence, attention, and connecting with something ancestral. For anyone looking for a different kind of mindfulness practice, one that’s active and outdoors rather than seated and still, we think this offers something genuinely unique.
